[. . . ] A Lernout & Hauspie Company Quick Start When you see this. . . . . . you can talk to your favorite programs! Dragon NaturallySpeaking lets you talk to your computer instead of typing. You can talk to Microsoft® Word, Corel® WordPerfect®, e-mail, chat, and virtually any other program in which you normally type. Talking to a program while Dragon NaturallySpeaking types what you say is called "dictating. [. . . ] Click the Help icon and click View Command List, or look in the Command Appendix of your user's guide. Pause. Say "Select hello, " without pausing between "select" and "hello. " Pause again. Notice that when the words are selected, the program highlights them and displays a list of possible corrections. This list is called the Quick Correct list. (The Quick Correct list appears only in the DragonPad. ) Selecting Words It's normal for the computer to misunderstand some words, especially at first. Fixing the mistakes Dragon NaturallySpeaking makes may slow you down a bit, but once you get the hang of dictating, it's a lot faster than typing. This next section tells you how to change, delete, insert, and format words you dictate. If the word you want is on the Quick Correct list, say "Choose" and the number next to the correct word. N O TE If the word you want isn't on the list, you can spell it. We'll show you how in the next section. You can unselect the last thing you selected by saying "Unselect That. " Dictate this sentence: I have always wanted to see the White House [period] Say "Select White House" (do not pause between "Select" and "White House"). Notice that the selected words are highlighted. Say "Unselect That. " The selection disappears. Changing Words with Select/ Quick Correct To use Dragon NaturallySpeaking effectively, you must master selecting words by using the Select command. The key to using the Select command is to pause in the right places. For example, here's how you pause when you select the word "hello. " PAGE 11 Changing Words with Select and Spell When Dragon NaturallySpeaking makes a mistake, it may be because the word you said is not in the program's vocabulary. In this case, the correct word won't be on the Quick Correct list. Here's what to do: If it didn't work (for example, the word "select" is typed in your document), you may have paused in the middle of saying the command. Say "Select White House" again, and this time say it without pausing. N O TE Select commands work on any text you have dictated in the DragonPad, but in other programs you may only be able to select the last thing you said. See your Command Quick Reference card at the back of this guide for more information, or the Command Appendix of your user's guide. the word has a capital letter, just say "cap" before that letter. 1. Spell or type the word in the Correction box. Once the text is selected, say "Lincoln Memorial. " These words should replace "White House. " When text is selected, the next thing you say replaces the selected text. If the wrong thing happens, immediately say "Undo That" to undo the last replacement. 4. When the correct word appears in the Correction Changing Words with Select-and-SayTM Sometimes the program types the words you said, but you change your mind. Here's how to edit your words. box, choose it by saying, for example, "Choose 1. " You can choose any number that appears in the list. Deleting Words To delete words anywhere in your document, select the words and say "Scratch That. " To delete words you just dictated, pause briefly and say "Scratch That. " Dictate the sentence below, without pausing. Meet me at the front entrance to the Smithsonian [period] Say "Select front. " Say "Scratch That. " The word "front" disappears. Say "Go to Bottom" to move to the end of your document. [. . . ] Make the last thing you said all lowercase (or selected text in supported programs). Turn all capitals on (like pressing the CAPS LOCK key).
