Please read this manual thoroughly before making connections and turning on the power. Following the instructions in this manual will enable you to obtain optimum performance and listening enjoyment from your new DVD Receiver. Please retain this manual for future reference. Operating the Onkyo cassette tape deck First, connect the cassette tape deck to the DVD Receiver with the z cable (see page 12). Note If you turn on the SPEAKERS B system, the SPEAKERS A system also reproduces stereo sound automatically. (The listening mode is set to "Stereo. " See page 38. ) Even if you turn off the SPEAKER B system later, the listening mode remains to "Stereo" until you select another listening mode. Adjusting the Volume The volume of the front left and right, center, surround left and right, and subwoofer speakers will be adjusted at the same time. When headphones are connected (see next page), you can adjust the volume of the sound through the headphones. Operating with the remote controller Press VOL / . The lit SP A and SP B indicators indicate the corresponding speaker systems are On. SP A B VOL Operating with the remote controller SP A Operating with the unit VOLUME 7 Press SP A to turn on or off the SPEAKERS A system. Turn VOLUME clockwise to increase the volume, or counterclockwise (anticlockwise) to decrease the volume. SP B +10 -- / --- Press SP B to turn on or off the SPEAKERS B system. Muting the Sound Note It is impossible to turn off both speakers at the same time. Remote controller only MUTING Operating with the unit Press SPEAKER A/B repeatedly. Each press of the button changes the On/Off mode as follows: Only the SPEAKERS A system turns on. Both the SPEAKERS A and B systems turn on. Press MUTING. "Muting" appears in the multipurpose display for about three seconds. Also the MUTING indicator flashes in the display during the muting mode. MUTING SPEAKER A/B To restore the sound, press MUTING again. Tip If you turn off the unit during muting, and turn it on again, the sound will be restored. 32 SLEEP SLE EP ON STNBY INPUT SELECTOR MODE Correlation between the MODE buttons and operation buttons explained on pages 32 and 33. STANDBY/ON ON Using the Sleep Timer Remote controller only S LE EP STANDBY POWER ON OFF Press SLEEP. "Sleep 90min" appears in the multipurpose display for about five seconds, which means the DVD Receiver will turn off and enter standby mode in 90 minutes. Also the SLEEP indicator is lit in the display while the sleep timer is On. PHONES Each press of the button makes the remaining time shorter by 10 minutes. Notes · The speakers will not reproduce sound while headphones are connected. · The listening mode is set to "Stereo" after connecting the headphones to the PHONES jack. · When you disconnect the headphones, the listening mode returns to the previous mode. Checking the remaining time Press SLEEP while the Sleep Timer is On. If you press SLEEP while the remaining time is displayed, the remaining time is reduced by 10 minutes. Canceling the Sleep Timer Controlling the Brightness of the Lights on the DVD Receiver Remote controller only DIMMER Press SLEEP repeatedly until the SLEEP indicator goes off. Press DIMMER. Each press of the button changes the brightness as follows: The display becomes less bright. The display is dimmed, and the r (open/ close), e (stop), and s (play) lamps (buttons) go off (see page 22). The display resumes the original brightness and the r, e, and s lamps (buttons) light. 33 Enjoying the Sound Effects The surround sound of the DVD Receiver enables you to enjoy the presence of a movie theater or concert hall in your room. Before using any sound effect, make sure the Speaker Setup configurations have been set (see page 17). [. . . ] · There is a tall building or a mountain nearby.
