[. . . ] If you have not burned the new device driver onto a CD, execute the file setup. exe of the downloaded device driver. 46 Appendix Appendix Fault tracing Symptom Interference Causes and countermeasures If there is interference when operating your PC with the Gigaset WLAN-Adapter, try one or more of the following measures to remedy it: N Remove the Gigaset PCI Card 54 form the PCI slot and reinsert it. N Increase the distance between your PC and the device causing the interference. N Connect your PC containing the Gigaset WLAN-Adapter to a different electric circuit (via the socket outlet) than the one the device is currently using, which could be causing the interference. N Do not place your PC with the Gigaset WLAN-Adapter near microwave devices or devices with wireless video-audio transmission, e. g. , wireless monitoring devices for infants, and also not near large metal objects. Ask your dealer or an experienced radio technician for advice. If the Gigaset WLAN-Adapter is not detected by your PC operating system, take one or more of the following countermeasures: N Check if the Gigaset PCI Card 54 is inserted correctly in the PCI slot of your PC. Check if it is a PCI slot and if this slot operates free from defects. N Contact your dealer and arrange for an additional test of the Gigaset WLAN-Adapter If the connection quality is displayed as "poor" on the user interface of your PC, the following causes could be responsible. Take the respective indicated countermeasures: N Interference (for countermeasures, see above) N There is too much distance between your PC with the Gigaset WLAN-Adapter and the connection partner Reduce this distance. Card is not detected Poor connection quality 47 Appendix Symptom No connection to another wireless network adapter Causes and countermeasures If a connection between your PC with the Gigaset WLANAdapter and another wireless network adapter cannot be established, the following causes could be responsible. Take the respective indicated countermeasures: N SSID is incorrectly configured Ensure that the same SSID is configured for all connection partners with network adapters for wireless operation. N Changes in the configuration are not detected by your PC Restart your PC. N The IP address or subnet mask is incorrectly configured Ensure that these parameters are correctly configured using the TCP/IP properties dialog box of the Network configuration tab. As a rule, it is necessary to assign fixed IP addresses when operating a network in Ad-hoc mode. To set IP addresses, also see the document "Practical Tips and Configuration Examples" on the included CD. If you cannot establish a connection between your PC with the Gigaset WLAN-Adapter and an Access Point, take one or more of the following countermeasures: N Ensure that the physical connection of the Access Point operates reliably. N Check if the same SSID was configured for both the Gigaset WLAN-Adapter and the Access Point. N Check if the security settings configured for the Gigaset WLAN-Adapter match those for the Access Point, e. g. , the same keys for WEP encryption. N Check if your access to Access Point is blocked by other security measures, e. g. , by a MAC filter or filter for IP addresses. N The IP address or subnet mask is incorrectly configured Ensure that these parameters are correctly configured using the TCP/IP properties dialog box of the Network configuration tab. As a rule, it is necessary to assign dynamic IP addresses when operating a network in Infrastructure mode. No connection to Access Point 48 Appendix Symptom Causes and countermeasures Installation cancelled If the following error message appears when installing the under Windows 2000 Gigaset WLAN-Adapter under Windows 2000: "1608: Unable to create InstallDriver instance" and the installation is cancelled, the cause is that the Microsoft Network Client component is missing. To install this component, do the following: N In Control panel double-click on the Network and dial-up connections icon. Right-click with the mouse on Local Area Connection, and select Properties.
