Record the serial number in the space provided below. Refer to them whenever you call upon your Sony dealer regarding this product. Do not install the appliance in a confined space, such as a bookcase or built-in cabinet. [. . . ] To enter 0, press 10/0 instead. Example: · The preset stations are retained for about a day even if you disconnect the power cord or if a power failure occurs. · You can label the preset stations (see page 16). · To improve the broadcast reception, adjust the supplied antennas, or connect a commercially available external antenna. Tuner Listening to a non-preset radio station -- Manual Tuning Listening to the radio You can listen to a radio station either by selecting a preset station or by manually tuning in a station. 1 Press TUNER/BAND (or TUNER BAND on the remote) repeatedly to select "FM" or "AM". 2 Press TUNING MODE on the remote repeatedly until "MANUAL" appears. Listening to a preset station -- Preset Tuning Preset radio stations in the tuner's memory first (see "Presetting radio stations" on page 13). 3 Press TUNING ­ or + (or ­ or + on the remote) repeatedly to tune in the desired station. Tips 1 Press TUNER/BAND (or TUNER BAND on the remote) repeatedly to select "FM" or "AM". 2 Press TUNING MODE on the remote repeatedly until "PRESET" appears. 3 Press TUNING ­ or + (or ­ or + on the remote) repeatedly to select the desired preset station (or station name* or RDS station name**). * The station name appears only if you have labeled the station (see "Labeling the preset stations" on page 16). ** European model only. · To improve the broadcast reception, adjust the supplied antennas, or connect a commercially available external antenna. · When an FM stereo program has static noise, press FM MODE on the remote repeatedly until "MONO" appears. There will be no stereo effect, but the reception will improve. · Press TUNING MODE on the remote repeatedly until "AUTO" appears in step 2, then press TUNING ­ or + (or ­ or + on the remote). The frequency indication changes and the scanning stops when the system tunes in a station (Automatic Tuning). 15GB Labeling the preset stations -- Station Name You can label each preset station with up to 10 symbols or characters (Station Name). Using the Radio Data System (RDS) (European model only) What is the Radio Data System? 1 Tune the preset station you want to label (see "Listening to the radio" on page 15). Radio Data System (RDS)* is a broadcasting service that allows radio stations to send additional information along with the regular program signal. Note 2 Follow the same procedures as from steps 2 to 6 of "Labeling a CD" on page 11. To cancel labeling RDS may not work properly if the station you have tuned in is not transmitting the RDS signal properly or if the signal is weak. * Not all FM stations provide RDS service, nor do they all provide the same type of services. If you are not familiar with the RDS system, check with your local radio stations for details on RDS services in your area. Press MENU/NO on the remote. To erase the name 1 Tune the station. 3 Press CLEAR on the remote repeatedly to erase the name. Receiving RDS broadcasts Simply select a station from the FM band. 4 Press ENTER/YES on the remote. When you tune in a station that provides RDS services, the station name appears in the display. To check the RDS information Each time you press DISPLAY, the display changes cyclically as follows: Station name** t Frequency t Clock display t Volume ** If the RDS broadcast is not properly received, the station name may not appear. 16GB Sound Adjustment Timer Adjusting the sound Generating a more dynamic sound -- DSG Press DSG* on the remote. Falling asleep to music -- Sleep Timer You can set the system to turn off after a certain time, so that you can fall asleep to music. Press SLEEP on the remote repeatedly. "DSG" appears. To cancel the DSG, press DSG on the remote again. * DSG: Dynamic Sound Generator Tip Each time you press the button, the minute display (the turn-off time) changes cyclically as follows: AUTO* t 90min t 80min t 70min t . . . t 10min t OFF * The system automatically turns off after the current sound source finishes playing (up to 4 hours). To Press Sound Adjustment/Timer DSG is factory set to on. Selecting the surround effect Press SURROUND on the remote. Check the remaining sleep time** Change the time to turn off Cancel the Sleep Timer function SLEEP on the remote once. SLEEP on the remote repeatedly to select the time you want. SLEEP on the remote repeatedly until "OFF" appears. "SURR" appears. To cancel the surround effect, press SURROUND on the remote again. Adjusting the bass and treble To adjust Press Bass Treble BASS + or ­ on the remote repeatedly. TREBLE + or ­ on the remote repeatedly. ** You cannot check the remaining time when you select "AUTO". Tips · You can adjust the bass and treble in 7 steps (from ­3 to +3). · You can enjoy the original sound by setting BASS and TREBLE to "­ ­". 17GB Waking up to music -- Play Timer By setting the Play Timer, you can make the system automatically turn on and off at specified day and times. To use this function, make sure that you have set the system clock correctly (see "Setting the clock" on page 8). 5 Set the time to start playing. If you selected "PLAY ONCE?" or "PLAY WEEKLY?" in step 4, press . or > on the remote to set the day, then press ENTER/YES on the remote. or > on the remote repeatedly to set the hour, then press ENTER/YES on the remote. On placement · Do not place the system in an inclined position. · Do not place the system in locations where it is: -- Extremely hot or cold -- Dusty or dirty -- Very humid -- Subject to vibrations -- Subject to direct sunlight. · Use caution when placing the unit or speakers on surfaces that have been specially treated (with wax, oil, polish, etc. ) as staining or discoloration of the surface may result. continued 25GB Precautions (continued) On heat buildup · Although the unit heats up during operation, this is not a malfunction. · To prevent heat build-up in the system, place the system in a location with adequate ventilation and refrain from placing anything on the top of the cabinet.
