Before you start performing a HotSync operation via modem
Check the following: · A modem or terminal adapter is connected to your computer. · The CLIE Modem PEGA-MD700 (not supplied) must be connected to your CLIE handheld. · The Palm Desktop for CLIE software must be properly configured for use with the modem.

Preparing your computer
There are a few steps you must perform to prepare your computer for a modem HotSync operation. Be sure to perform these steps before you leave your office or home so that your computer is ready to receive a call from your CLIE handheld.

Check the following to prepare your computer for a modem HotSync operation:
· The computer modem must be connected to your computer and both the modem and computer are turned on. · No communication applications, such as fax or telephony software, are running on the COM port. · The computer is disconnected from all online services. This helps to avoid conflicts with the COM port.

Click the HotSync icon in the Windows task tray (bottomright corner of the taskbar) and then select Modem from the shortcut menu. Click the HotSync icon in the Windows task tray again and then select Setup from the shortcut menu.
The Setup dialog box is displayed.
Click the Modem tab.

Adjust the following options as needed.
· Serial Port: Identifies the port for the modem. If you are unsure of the port assignment, look at the Modem Properties in the Windows Control Panel. · Speed: Determines the speed at which data is transferred. Try the "As Fast As Possible" rate first, and then adjust downward if you experience problems. Everything you need to connect to your company's dial-in server (network modem) is included in the Palm Desktop for CLIE software and your CLIE handheld. You need to activate certain features, however, on both the Palm Desktop for CLIE software and your CLIE handheld.

Click the HotSync icon in the Windows task tray and then select Network from the shortcut menu. Click the HotSync icon in the Windows task tray again and then select Setup from the shortcut menu.
The Setup dialog box is displayed.
Click the Network tab and make sure your user name has a check-mark next to it. If the check-mark is not there, click the check box next to your user name. Click OK.

Place your CLIE handheld on the cradle and perform a HotSync operation.
The HotSync operation records network information about your computer onto your CLIE handheld. With this information, your CLIE handheld can locate your computer when you perform a HotSync operation via the network.
Preparing your CLIE handheld

Rotate the Jog Dial navigator to select HotSync and then press the Jog Dial navigator. Or tap the HotSync icon on the Application Launcher screen.
The HotSync screen appears.

Tap the Menu

Tap Options, and then tap Modem Sync Prefs.
The Modem Sync Preferences screen is displayed.

Tap Network. Tap OK.
The HotSync screen appears again.

Tap Modem and then Select Service.
The Preferences screen is displayed.

Tap the arrow V next to Service and then select a service from the drop-down list.

Importing data from a Windows application
If you have data stored in Windows computer applications such as spreadsheets and databases, you can transfer that data to your CLIE handheld.
Importable file formats
Save data in one of the file formats listed below, import it into the Palm Desktop for CLIE software, and then perform a HotSync operation to transfer the data to your CLIE handheld. The Palm Desktop for CLIE software can import data in the following file formats: · Comma delimited (*. csv, *. txt): Address Book and Memo Pad only · Tab delimited (*. tab, *. tsv, *. txt): Address Book and Memo Pad only · CSV (Lotus Organizer 2. x/97 Mapping): Address Book only · Date Book archive (*. dba) · Address Book archive (*. aba) · To Do archive (*. tda) · Memo Pad archive (*. mpa) Archive formats can only be used with the Palm Desktop for CLIE software. Use the archive file formats to share information with other people who use a Palm OS® platform handheld or to create a copy of your important the Palm Desktop for CLIE software information.
