Hooking up the system
Do the following procedures 1 to 3 to hook up your system using the supplied cords.

1 Connect the AU BUS connecting
cord to the AU BUS connectors until it clicks.
3 Set VOLTAGE SELECTOR to the
position of your local power line voltage.

2 Connect the audio connecting cords
to the jacks of the same colour.
4 Connect the mains lead to a wall
outlet.

Playing a tape
You can use any type of tape, TYPE I (normal), TYPE II (CrO2) or TYPE IV (metal), since the tape deck automatically detects the tape type (ATS*). * ATS: Automatic Tape Selection.

Press ª to play the reverse side. The tape starts playing.

Recording a CD
-- CD Synchro Recording
The CD SYNC button lets you record from a CD to a tape easily. You can use TYPE I (normal) or TYPE II (CrO2) tape, since the tape deck automatically detects the tape type. POWER

Place a CD in the CD player. Set DIRECTION to A to record on one side. Press CD SYNC on the tape deck.
The tape deck stands by for recording and the CD player stands by for playback. The lamps on ® REC, CD SYNC, · (for upper side) and light up.

To stop recording
Press on the tape deck or on the CD player. Tips
Turn the DHC-MD5 component system on.
The tape deck turns on automatically.
Press § on the tape deck and place a blank tape. Pressing § again closes the cassette tray.
With the side you want to record on facing upward
· If you want to record from the reverse side, press ª (for reverse side) so that the lamp on ª lights up. · When you record on both sides, be sure to start from the upper side. If you start from the reverse side, recording stops at the end of the reverse side. Otherwise the tape may get entangled in the parts of the tape deck and become damaged.
Demagnetizing the tape heads
Demagnetize the tape heads and the metal parts that has contact with the tape after every 20 to 30 hours of use with a separately sold demagnetizing cassette. For details, refer to the instructions of the demagnetizing cassette.
When using a tape longer than 90 minutes
The tape is very elastic. Do not change the tape operations such as play, stop, and fast-winding etc. The tape may get entangled in the tape deck.
Cleaning the cabinet
Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent solution. Never use strong solvents, such as thinner or benzine, since they may damage the finish. If you have any questions or problems concerning your tape deck, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.

Troubleshooting
If you run into any problem using this tape deck, use the following check list. First, check that the mains lead is connected firmly and the speakers are connected correctly and firmly. Should any problem persist, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
There is excessive wow or flutter, or the sound drops out. ·The capstans in the tape deck are dirty. Noise increases or the high frequencies are erased. ·The record/playback heads are magnetized. [. . . ] ·Make sure the connection of the AU BUS connecting cord is correct.
The cassette tray does not close. ·Turn on the tape deck again and press §. The operating buttons on the tape deck do not work. ·Press any of the operating buttons after the lamp on stops flashing. [. . . ]
