Safety Information Owner's Record The model number and serial number are located on the bottom of your Sony Notebook Computer. Record the serial number in the space provided here. [. . . ] Use the computer's battery bay to charge the battery if you are in a hurry. When your computer is attached to the docking station, you cannot charge your battery and operate the computer at the same time. To remove the battery pack 1 2 Open the cover of the battery charger bay. Press the Eject button. Eject button Battery pack 3 Pull out the battery pack. Connecting Peripheral Devices 49 4 Close the cover of the battery charger bay. The battery charger indicator is a reference for the battery charge. To check the accurate charging amount, insert the charged battery in the computer and use BatteryScope (See "Displaying Battery Information" on page 68. ). To insert the CD-ROM or floppy disk drive into the docking station You can use the CD-ROM drive or the floppy disk drive in the docking station. By using the multi purpose bays in both the computer and the docking station, you can use the CD-ROM drive and the floppy disk drive at the same time. Multi purpose bay CD-ROM drive Floppy disk drive Turn off the computer before inserting or removing the drive. To remove the drive There is an Eject lever on the bottom of the drive. Slide the lever in the direction of the arrow, and then pull the drive out of the bay. Insert another drive or the weight saver into the multi purpose bay. See "Using the Weight Saver" on page 40. Do not leave the multi purpose bay empty. To remove your computer from the docking station when the power is on 1 2 Check that the charged battery is inserted in the computer. If you press Fn+F9, the computer beeps. Do not remove the computer before the IN USE indicator light turns off. Removing the computer before the light turns off may cause malfunction. 50 Sony Notebook Computer User Guide 3 Slide the docking station lever forward into the RELEASE position to disengage the computer from the docking station. 4 Lift the computer away from the docking station. 5 Close the docking station port cover on the back of your computer. You cannot remove your computer from the docking station when the power is on, unless the charged battery is inserted in the computer. To remove your computer from the docking station when the power is off 1 2 3 4 Turn off your computer and the connected peripherals. Slide the docking lever forward into the RELEASE position to disengage the computer from the docking station. Lift the computer away from the docking station. Close the docking station port cover on the back of your computer. If the docking station lever does not move, insert a sharp, pointed object into the manual eject hole on the rear of the docking station. . Connecting Peripheral Devices 51 Connecting a Printer You can connect a Windows-compatible printer to your computer to print documents. To connect a printer u Use the / symbol to locate the FDD/Printer connector. Plug the printer cable (supplied with the printer) into this port on the computer. Power cord Printer Printer cable (supplied with the printer) to / FDD/Printer See the manual that came with your printer for more information on installation and use. Before using the printer, you may need to change the FDD/Printer setting in the Sony Notebook Setup software. See "Displaying the Sony Notebook Setup Screen" on page 63. 52 Sony Notebook Computer User Guide Connecting an External Display You can connect an external display to your notebook computer. For example, you can use the computer with a: u u u u Computer display (monitor) (page 52) Multimedia computer display (page 52) Projector (page 53) TV (page 54) To connect a computer display u The symbol on the back of the computer shows the location of the Monitor connector. Plug the display cable into this connector on the back of the computer. u If necessary, plug one end of the display power cord into the display, and the other end into an AC outlet. You may not be able to display images on the connected TV or the screen image may flicker when the resolution is 1024x768 pixels. To connect a multimedia computer display You can connect the notebook computer to a multimedia computer display that includes built-in speakers and a microphone. 1 2 Use the symbol to locate the Monitor connector. Plug the display cable into this connector. [. . . ] Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud and extended play. 87 On Maintenance u Make sure to disconnect the power cord before cleaning the computer. u u Avoid rubbing the LCD screen as this can damage the screen. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the LCD screen. Clean the computer with a soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution.
