This section describes how to get started with using your VAIO computer.

The data stored in the TPM that are embedded on the motherboard may be lost or corrupted during the course of repair. During the course of repair, the TPM may be replaced even if there are no problems with the modules. In such a case, use the backup copies of the emergency recovery archive file and the emergency recovery token file to restore the TPM configuration. Make sure to make a backup copy of the data stored on the hard disk before sending your computer for repair. The hard disk may be initialized and returned after the repair work and, in such a case, you will not be able to restore the data on the hard disk using the backup copies of the emergency recovery archive file and the emergency recovery token file. The maintenance and management of TPM-protected data must be carried out at your own risk. Sony Corporation assumes no liabilities for any defects arising out of your data maintenance and management.

Do not encrypt the Documents and Settings folder. Encrypting the files in the folders containing basic user keys and others, which are listed later in this section, using the Encrypting File System (EFS) will disable you to launch your TPM software successfully and decrypt the encrypted data if: The TPM software has been installed. The EFS functionality has been enabled in user initialization process. With the default settings, the files in the folders below are prevented from encrypting by having system attributes. Setting Up Your Computer with VAIO Central
The VAIO Central utility allows you to consult system information and specify preferences for system behavior.
To use VAIO Central
1 2 3 Click Start, point to All Programs, and click VAIO Central. Select the desired control item and change the settings. The setting of the desired item has been changed.
Some of the control items will not be visible if you open VAIO Central as a limited user.

Using the Power Saving Modes
When you use a battery as the power source for your computer, you can take advantage of power management settings to conserve battery life. In addition to the normal operating mode, which allows you to turn off specific devices, your computer has two distinct power saving modes: Standby and Hibernate. When using battery power, you should be aware that the computer automatically enters Hibernate mode when the remaining battery charge becomes short, regardless of the power management setting you select.
!If the battery level falls below 10 percent, you should either attach the AC adapter to recharge the battery or shut down the computer and install a fully charged battery.
Using Normal Mode
This is the normal state of the computer when it is in use. The green power indicator light is on in this mode. To save power while not working, you can turn off a specific device such as the LCD screen or the hard disk.

Using Standby Mode
Standby mode turns off the LCD screen and sets the hard disk and the CPU to a low power consumption mode. The umber power light flashes in this mode.
To activate Standby mode
