No part of this publication may be copied, reproduced or otherwise transmitted or recorded, for any purpose, without prior written permission by Steinberg Media Technologies AG. [. . . ] However, this operation relies on communication between WaveLab Lite and the card's driver, i. e. if the driver does not reply correctly to WaveLab Lite's inquiries, a mixer cannot be created and the program will alert you. If this is the case, please use the application included with the card to access the settings. Exactly what controls will appear in the mixer depends on the card, but here are some possibilities: · · · · · Master Gain (output-fader) Synth In (input-fader plus on/off checkbox) CD (input-fader plus on/off checkbox) Line (input-fader plus on/off checkbox) Mic (input-fader plus on/off checkbox) In addition to the above, the card might have custom controls for monitoring etc. , which cannot be accessed from the WaveLab Lite mixer. Again, please use the application(s) included with the card. The meters If you want to check the recording level, activate the Monitor option in the dialog. · When monitoring is activated, horizontal bars show the peak level (outer bars) and average loudness (VU, inner bars) of each channel. The values are also shown numerically. Use the level meter to check the audio input level. Adjust this (with the mixer controls or the audio card's applications), so that the peak level meters go as high as possible without ever reaching 0dB! WaveLab Lite 5 58 Playback and Recording Checking disk capacity · Check the disk capacity indicator at the bottom of the dialog to make sure you have enough disk space for the recording. This indicator shows the amount of available disk space on the hard disk you have selected for your temporary files. Please note that this is an approximate value. Start recording! 1. When all the preparations are done, click Record to start the actual recording. The recorded time indicator shows you how much you have recorded. 2. When you have finished, click Stop. The recording appears in a new window behind the dialog. 3. Play back the recording by clicking the Play button. When you click Play, the meters are automatically turned off. 4. If you want to perform more recordings after the first, simply click the Record button and record again. When you have finished, click the door icon to close the dialog. If you want to save the file(s) permanently, click on each document you have created and use Save As on the File menu to save each one. See page 68 for details. Playback and Recording WaveLab Lite 5 59 WaveLab Lite 5 60 Playback and Recording 6 Document and file handling About file formats The supported audio file formats WaveLab Lite can open and save Wave (". wav") and AIFF (". aif") files. Wave files are the most common file format on the PC platform. If you plan to load the files into any other PC program, this format is a safe bet. AIFF ("Audio Interchange File Format") is a standard defined by Apple Computers Inc. Creating new empty documents If you want to start with an empty file, for assembling material from other files e. g. , proceed as follows: · Select New from the file menu, and Wave from the submenu that appears or click the New icon on the Standard commands control bar and activate the desired options in the dialog that appears. Hold down [Ctrl] and drag to make up a box in some empty free area of the WaveLab Lite window. For this to work, the "Create Windows using mouse" option must be activated on the Display tab of the Preferences dialog and the box must be of a certain minimum size. · Opening Waves Using the Open dialog 1. Select "Open. . . " from the File menu, press [Ctrl]-[O] or click the Open icon on the Standard commands control bar. Select the desired file in the dialog that appears and click Open. If you want to open multiple files, press [Shift] for continuous selections and [Ctrl] for selecting any combination of files. The Wave appears in a new window. You can also audition a file before you open it. You can also have files play back automatically as soon as they are selected: Click on the "Auto" button so that it is activated (light grey). WaveLab Lite 6 62 Document and file handling Inserting a file into the current document You may have a file you want to insert into an existing file. The two should have similar attributes (sample rate for example), or a warning will appear. [. . . ] To create a startup "layout", proceed as follows: 1. Set up all windows as desired, activate "Open last window layout on startup" and quit the program. Launch the program again, and deactivate "Open last window layout on startup". · If you hold down [Ctrl] when quitting the program, the effect of the "Open last window layout on startup" setting is reversed.
