[. . . ] If you lift up the handset on an additional telephone that is connected to the EXT outlet, and you hear that you are receiving a fax call (whistling tone or silence), you can start the fax reception process by pressing *5, or by pressing START on the machine. You should set the device to this mode if you have additional devices connected to the EXT outlet of your machine, especially an external answering machine. If an additionally connected answering machine receives a call, your machine will check to determine whether or not the incoming call is a fax transmission. if the device recognizes a fax signal , it will automatically receive the fax transmission. If you do not have an answering machine connected or if a connected answering machine does not accept the call, the machine will take over the call after a predetermined number of rings and automatically receive any possible fax transmission being sent. To use this function, additional telephones must be set to the tone dialing mode (DTMF tones) (see the chapter entitled Installation / Easylink). When poor connection quality is known beforehand--with an overseas fax recipient, for example--you should select a slower speed in order to save time and telephone costs for the automatic adjustment.
