4. Lap: S valve face S valve seat NOTE: After replacing the cylinder head or replacing the valve and valve guide, the valve seat and valve face should be lapped.

a. Apply a coarse lapping compound a to the valve face.
CAUTION:
Do not let the lapping compound enter the gap between the valve stem and the valve guide. Apply molybdenum disulfide oil onto the valve stem. Install the valve into the cylinder head. Turn the valve until the valve face and valve seat are evenly polished, then clean off all of the lapping compound. NOTE: For the best lapping results, lightly tap the valve seat while rotating the valve back and forth between your hands. Apply a fine lapping compound to the valve face and repeat the above steps. After every lapping procedure, be sure to clean off all of the lapping compound from the valve face and valve seat. Apply Mechanic's blueing dye (Dykem) onto the valve face. Refer to "FUEL TANK" in chapter 3. Refer to "COWLINGS" in chapter 3. Refer to "CHANGING THE ENGINE OIL" in chapter 3. Disconnect.

REMOVING THE GENERATOR 1. Remove: S rider seat S fuel tank Refer to "SEATS" and "FUEL TANK" in chapter 3. Remove: S left side cowling S bottom cowlings Refer to "COWLINGS" in chapter 3. Drain: S engine oil Refer to "CHANGING THE ENGINE OIL" in chapter 3.
4. Remove: S plug S generator rotor cover 1 NOTE: S While pushing generator rotor, remove the generator rotor cover. S Loosen each bolt 1/4 of a turn a time, in stages and in a crisscross pattern. S After all of the bolts are fully loosened, remove them. Remove: S generator rotor and starter clutch assembly 1.
6. [. . . ] Connect the battery (DC 12 V) to the fuel pump coupler as shown. If fuel flows out of the fuel hose, the fuel pump is OK. If fuel does not flow, replace the fuel pump.

The YZF-R1(S) features a self-diagnosing system for the following circuit(-s): S Fuel pump thermistor S Oil level switch If any of these circuits are defective, their respective condition codes will be displayed on the warning light when the main switch is turned "ON" (irrespective of whether the engine is running or not).
