Particularly important information is distinguished in this manual by the following notations: The Safety Alert Symbol means ATTENTION! [. . . ] Clean the surface of the spark plug gasket and its mating surface, and then wipe off any grime from the spark plug threads. Install the spark plug with the spark plug wrench, and then tighten it to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: Spark plug: 12. 5 Nm (1. 25 m·kgf, 9. 0 ft·lbf)

NOTE: The engine oil should be between the minimum and maximum level marks. Start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, and then turn it off. Place an oil pan under the engine to collect the used oil. Remove the engine oil filler cap and drain bolt to drain the oil from the crankcase.
1. Minimum level mark
NOTE: Skip steps 57 if the oil filter cartridge is not being replaced. Remove the oil filter cartridge with an oil filter wrench.
1. If the engine oil is at or below the minimum level mark, add sufficient oil of the recommended type to raise it to the correct level. To change the engine oil (with or without oil filter cartridge replacement) 1. Oil filter wrench 6-12

NOTE: An oil filter wrench is available at a Yamaha dealer. Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the O-ring of the new oil filter cartridge.
Tightening torque: Oil filter cartridge: 17 Nm (1. 7 m·kgf, 12 ft·lbf)

8. Do not use hard water or salt water since it is harmful to the engine. If water has been used instead of coolant, replace it with coolant as soon as possible, otherwise the engine may not be sufficiently cooled and the cooling system will not be protected against frost and corrosion. If water has been added to the coolant, have a Yamaha dealer check the antifreeze content of the coolant as soon as possible, otherwise the effectiveness of the coolant will be reduced.

NOTE: G The radiator fan is automatically switched on or off according to the coolant temperature in the radiator. G If the engine overheats, see page 6-43 for further instructions.

To change the coolant 1. Place the vehicle on a level surface and let the engine cool if necessary. Remove the fuel tank bolts, and then lift the fuel tank. (Do not remove the fuel hoses. )

1. Remove the right air intake duct by loosening the clamp screws.

WARNING Never attempt to remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
Make sure that the fuel tank is well supported. Do not tilt or pull the fuel tank too much, otherwise the fuel hoses may come loose, which could cause fuel leakage.
