In addition, the many tips given in this manual will help keep your motorcycle in the best possible condition. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact your Yamaha dealer. [. . . ] Remove the bolt, and then pull the panel off at the areas shown. Checking the spark plug The spark plug is an important engine component, which is easy to check. Since heat and deposits will cause any spark plug to slowly erode, the spark plug should be removed and checked in accordance with the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. In addition, the condition of the spark plug can reveal the condition of the engine. Place the panel in the original position, and then install the bolt. 1. Remove the spark plug as shown, with the spark plug wrench included in the owner's tool kit. 6-7 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR Specified spark plug: NGK/CR7E 3. Install the spark plug with the spark plug wrench, and then tighten it to the specified torque. Tightening torque: Spark plug: 12. 5 Nm (1. 25 m·kgf, 9. 0 ft·lbf) To install the spark plug 1. Measure the spark plug gap with a wire thickness gauge and, if necessary, adjust the gap to specification. 1. Spark plug wrench 6 To check the spark plug 1. Check that the porcelain insulator around the center electrode of the spark plug is a medium-to-light tan (the ideal color when the vehicle is ridden normally). NOTE: If the spark plug shows a distinctly different color, the engine could be defective. Do not attempt to diagnose such problems yourself. Remove the drain bolt to drain the oil from the oil tank. 6. Remove the oil filter element drain bolt to drain the oil from the oil filter element. NOTE: Skip steps 7­9 if the oil filter element is not being replaced. Remove the oil filter element cover by removing the bolts. 1. Remove and replace the oil filter element and O-rings. 1. O-ring 6-10 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 9. Install the oil filter element cover by installing the bolts and the oil filter element drain bolt, then tightening them to the specified torques. Tightening torques: Oil filter element cover bolt: 10 Nm (1. 0 m·kgf, 7. 2 ft·lbf) Oil filter element drain bolt: 10 Nm (1. 0 m·kgf, 7. 2 ft·lbf) ECAM1060 CAUTION: The engine oil tank must be filled in 2 steps. First, fill the engine oil tank with 1. 90 L (2. 0 US qt) (1. 67 Imp. qt) of the recommended engine oil. Then, start the engine, race it 5 or 6 times, turn it off, and then add the remainder of the engine oil. Recommended engine oil: See page 8-1. Oil quantity: Without oil filter element replacement: 2. 50 L (2. 64 US qt) (2. 20 Imp. qt) With oil filter element replacement: 2. 60 L (2. 75 US qt) (2. 29 Imp. qt) ECA11620 G addition, do not use oils labeled "ENERGY CONSERVING II" or higher. Make sure that no foreign material enters the crankcase. NOTE: Make sure that the O-rings are properly seated.
