To maintain these high standards, it is important that you and your Yamaha dealer pay close attention to the recommended maintenance schedules and operating instructions contained within this manual. [. . . ] NOTE: Check the O-ring for damage and replace it if necessary. Clean the engine oil strainer with solvent. NOTE: Skip steps 6­11 if the oil filter element is not being cleaned. Remove the oil filter element drain 6-12 7. Remove the oil filter element cover by removing the bolts. PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR 3(×2) replace them if necessary. Clean the oil filter element with solvent, and then install it. NOTE: Check the oil filter element for damage and replace it if necessary. O-ring, compression spring, and oil strainer in position. Install the oil filter element cover by installing the bolts and drain bolt, then tightening them to the specified torques. Tightening torques: Oil filter element cover bolt: 10 Nm (1. 0 m·kgf, 7. 2 ft·lbf) Oil filter element drain bolt: 10 Nm (1. 0 m·kgf, 7. 2 ft·lbf) 13. Add the specified amount of the recommended engine oil, and then install and tighten the oil filler cap. Recommended oil: See page 8-1. Install the air filter case cover by installing the screws. Install the panel. NOTE: Make sure to select a well-ventilated area free of combustible materials to clean the spark arrester. Remove the tailpipe by removing the screw, and then pulling it out of the muffler. 6-15 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU21251 Carburetor 1 1 2 The carburetor is an important part of the engine and its emission control system, which requires very sophisticated adjustment. Tap the tailpipe lightly, and then use a wire brush to remove any carbon deposits from the spark arrester portion of the tailpipe and inside of the tailpipe housing. 3. Insert the tailpipe into the muffler, and then install and tighten the screw. NOTE: Make sure to align the screw holes when inserting the tailpipe. 6-16 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND MINOR REPAIR EAU21381 EAU21401 EAU21630 Checking the throttle cable free play Valve clearance The valve clearance changes with use, resulting in improper air-fuel mixture and/or engine noise. To prevent this from occurring, the valve clearance must be adjusted by a Yamaha dealer at the intervals specified in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart. Tires To maximize the performance, durability, and safe operation of your motorcycle, note the following points regarding the specified tires. Throttle cable free play G The throttle cable free play should measure 3. 0­5. 0 mm (0. 12­0. 20 in) at the throttle grip. Periodically check the throttle cable free play and, if necessary, have a Yamaha dealer adjust it.
